Law - the most interesting and scary subject this semester
Hey… I just cannot stop myself from telling u all about my Business Law lessons I have so far….My Business Law lecturer and tutor is scary and yet interesting. During our first tutorial, we were divided into small groups and then given a case study. One case was like this:
Mrs Brown’s son was sick at home and suddenly went into coma. Fearing that the boy might die, Mrs Brown rushed her son to the hospital. She was driving at 100km/h in a 60km/h zone. On arrival at the hospital, the child was placed in emergency care and the doctor commended Mrs. Brown for having saved the life of her child. A policeman arrived at the scene and presented Mrs Brown with a summons for dangerous driving.
Then we were supposed to decide if the accused were guilty and what crime has been committed. If so, what sort of punishment ought to be applied? Then we must explain also what legal framework we are applying in deciding the outcome of the case.
The group doing this case decided that Mrs Brown was guilty of dangerous driving and should be fined. However, in light of the circumstances, the fine reduced from the usual $300+ to $120.
My tutor : What is the point of law?
Group : To punish people who do wrong things. Mrs brown was risking the life of others on the road and therefore should be fined.
My Tutor : So you think that punishment is given out so that people will not dare to do the same wrong thing again?
Group : Yes…..
My tutor : So you are saying that Mrs Brown’s child went into coma again at home she should not rush to the hospital to save her child?
Wahh…. Interesting case… And though interesting as it is… I see no connection to BUSINESS LAW… hahaha….but I dint say that to my tutor though…
Hoho… there is some more… I just had my 2nd Law lecture today.. today was a little bit more interesting. He was telling us the history of English Constitution- why did they have both the king and the parliament and the problems they had initially with the different kings- they even executed one king for treason because he started a civil war when the parliament refused to raised tax as asked. During the lecture, he also asked many many questions.. Hahaha… but none of us were able to answer his questions. My lecturer always says that we are miserable little people who don’t know our history. Hmmm… do u know who wrote the declaration of America’s independence? Who the first representative from America in the British parliament is? Who the first vice president of America is? Hahaha….. He even suggested that we read the declaration of America’s independence cos it will bring tears to our eyes. He said that the words were so powerful. Great meanings all contained in short sentence. Bwahahahaha…..
One last interesting thing… I think you all know that Australian was once the jail for people from England right? Ok.. today I learnt that the first shipment of convicts there brought 350 women and about 1000 of male prisoners. After 6 months, they landed in Australia. At that time the place was not developed… The guards decided that the women should stay in the ship for safety while the men built houses and stuff.. after about 2 weeks, the accommodations were built. The women were given sacks as new clothes and they had celebrations there. However, that night, the sky turned grey and it rained.. What happen to the sacks worn by the women? Yes… It become heavy… However, it also became transparent. What happen to more than 1000 male when they see women nearly naked? Remember also that they have been on the sea for 6 months.. Yes!!! They raped the women…. Poor women….. 9 months later, according to the Australian record, 300+ babies were born… Hahahahaha… I find the story funny...
